What is a widget in WordPress? And How To Add In WordPress

For WordPress, widgets are content blocks that you can add to sidebars for your site, footer, and other areas. Have you ever visited someone’s blog and seen a photo, subscription form, or menu in the sidebar? All of those widgets and here we will discuss what is a widget in WordPress.

Each widget can add an element or function to your site, without having to write any code. The most common widgets you can add to your site are menus, popular post lists, calendars, banner ads, social icons, and more.

WordPress widgets were created to provide a simple and easy way for WordPress users to control the design. Also, to control the content of their site without encoding.

Many WordPress themes support widgets. Depending on your WordPress theme, widget areas may be header, footer, sidebar, under the content of your blog post, and almost any other site.

WordPress automatically comes with several widgets including categories, tag cloud, navigation menu, calendar, search bar, recent posts, and more.

Many WordPress plugins also add their own widgets that you can use to add plugin functionality to different categories. For example, you can add an email newsletter form to your sidebar, or add a contact form to your foot with a plugin like WPForms.

Widgets can be really helpful in helping your visitors navigate your site and encourage them to perform actions such as subscribing to your newsletter. Also, other functions like following you on social media can be put.

How to create a widget in WordPress

When you start a blog, setting up your widgets is an important step. Widgets are manageable to use and can be put by dragging and dropping them into one of your theme widget regions. You can find a list of the widgets available on your site by going to the Appearance »Widgets from the admin sidebar. Once there, you will see all available widgets on the left. Areas of your theme widget will be listed on the right.

How to add WordPress Widget

So, as per the list, you need to drag and drop the function into the area where you need to show the widget as we can see in the below image.

You can also move the widgets up and down to rearrange them.

Each widget comes with its own settings that you can see after adding the widget. Do not ignore clicking the Save option to save your widget settings.
